Shin Splints Recovery Timeline: Week by Week

A realistic, week-by-week recovery timeline for shin splints — what to do at each stage and when to expect to run again.

Realistic Recovery Window

Most runners recover from shin splints in 8-12 weeks if the early stages are respected. Pushing through doubles the timeline.

Days 1-3: Calm the tissue

  • Stop hard running and hills
  • Ice 10-15 min after activity
  • Cross-train pain-free (bike, pool)

Week 1: Restore pain-free walking

  • Daily tibialis and calf raises (light)
  • Walk-jog only if walking is fully pain-free
  • Audit shoes — replace if >400 miles

Weeks 2-3: Rebuild easy aerobic

  • Return to easy running at 50% prior volume
  • Add hip and glute strength 2x/week
  • Keep one cross-train day

Weeks 4-6: Restore full training

  • Progress mileage at 10%/week
  • Reintroduce strides, then tempo
  • Keep tibialis and calf work in the warm-up
