The Real-World Triggers
Shin Splints rarely has a single cause. In runners, these are the consistent contributors:
- Sudden mileage jump beyond the 10% weekly rule
- Switch to harder surfaces (track, concrete) without ramp-up
- Worn-out shoes past their cushioning lifespan (typically 400 miles)
- Weak calves, tibialis anterior, and hip abductors
- Overstriding or excessive heel-striking
- Low bone density or under-fueling (RED-S)
Why Runners in Particular
Running concentrates repeated impact and load through the same tissues thousands of times per session. Shin Splints develops when that load exceeds the tissue's adaptation rate — usually because training spiked, recovery dropped, or strength didn't keep up.
