Burnout Signs in Runners

Burnout is the psychological side of overtraining. Here's how to spot it early — and how to come back without quitting the sport.

What burnout looks like

Burnout isn't 'I had a bad week.' It's a sustained loss of motivation, emotional flatness about training, and a sense that running has stopped giving back. Most runners ignore it until they DNF a race or take a season off in frustration.

Signs to take seriously

Two or more for 3+ weeks:

  • Dreading workouts you used to look forward to
  • Going through the motions without feeling engaged
  • Cynicism about racing, coaches, training partners
  • Reduced satisfaction even from good performances
  • Identity strain — 'why am I even doing this?'

How to actually recover

Cut volume hard for 2-4 weeks. Don't replace running with another intense routine. Get a complete week off — most runners haven't taken one in years. Re-introduce running on feel, not by plan. Reconnect with why you started — group runs, new routes, training partners.
