Realistic Recovery Window
Most runners recover from stress fracture in 8-12 weeks if the early stages are respected. Pushing through doubles the timeline.
Weeks 1-2: Protect the bone
- No running
- Boot if prescribed
- Pain-free cross-training only (pool, bike)
Weeks 3-6: Bone healing
- Continue cross-training
- Address fueling, vitamin D, calcium
- Begin progressive strength
Weeks 6-8: Walk-jog progression
- Pain-free walking first, then walk-jog intervals
- Imaging follow-up if recommended
Weeks 8-12+: Return to full running
- 10% per week mileage progression
- Maintain strength and fueling
- Hill and speed work added last
