Hip Flexor Symptoms: How to Tell If You Have It

Every symptom of hip flexor runners should recognize — from the earliest warning signs to when to stop and see a clinician.

What Hip Flexor Feels Like

A hip flexor strain involves the iliopsoas or rectus femoris — the muscles that lift the leg forward. Most common in sprinters, hurdlers, and runners who spike speed work, but also seen in distance runners with high mileage and lots of sitting outside of training.

  • Sharp pain at the front of the hip when lifting the knee
  • Tightness deep in the hip after sitting
  • Discomfort during sprint warmups
  • Pain pushing off

Early Warning Signs

Catching hip flexor at this stage is the difference between a week of reduced training and a multi-week shutdown.

  • Tightness lifting the knee
  • Discomfort during sprint warmups
  • Stiffness after sitting

When to Stop and See a Clinician

  • Sharp pain on knee drive
  • Pain at rest
  • Pain putting weight on the leg
