Hamstring Symptoms: How to Tell If You Have It

Every symptom of hamstring runners should recognize — from the earliest warning signs to when to stop and see a clinician.

What Hamstring Feels Like

A hamstring strain is a tear in the muscle fibers of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, or semimembranosus. Grades range from I (microtears) to III (complete rupture). Distance runners typically get low-grade chronic strains; sprinters get sudden high-grade tears.

  • Tightness or pulling in the back of the thigh during speed
  • Sharp pain at the moment of injury for higher-grade strains
  • Tenderness on palpation
  • Bruising appearing 1-3 days later in moderate strains
  • Pain stretching the leg forward

Early Warning Signs

Catching hamstring at this stage is the difference between a week of reduced training and a multi-week shutdown.

  • Tightness in the back of the thigh
  • Discomfort during top-speed work
  • Stiffness sitting for long periods

When to Stop and See a Clinician

  • Sharp pain forcing you to stop
  • Bruising or visible swelling
  • Pain pushing off when sprinting
