Calf Strain Symptoms: How to Tell If You Have It

Every symptom of calf strain runners should recognize — from the earliest warning signs to when to stop and see a clinician.

What Calf Strain Feels Like

A calf strain is a tear of the gastrocnemius or soleus muscle fibers. Gastroc strains tend to be sudden and painful ('feels like being kicked'); soleus strains develop more gradually and are sometimes confused with shin splints or Achilles issues.

  • Sudden sharp pain in the calf (gastroc)
  • Gradual aching tightness during runs (soleus)
  • Bruising or swelling in moderate strains
  • Pain pushing off
  • Difficulty walking normally

Early Warning Signs

Catching calf strain at this stage is the difference between a week of reduced training and a multi-week shutdown.

  • Tightness or cramping in the calf
  • Discomfort during fast running
  • Stiffness in the morning

When to Stop and See a Clinician

  • Sharp pain that stops you mid-stride
  • Bruising or swelling
  • Difficulty walking
